Vehicle Abandonment
The abandoning of vehicles is always an irritating problem for local municipalities to deal with. Why do people abandon vehicles? One less common reason is when the owner becomes disgruntled with a vehicle that they bought after it continuously has broken down. In an act of spite against the lender, the car’s owner may since dump the car. Another common occurrence is when a renter is moving and has a non-running vehicle that they simply opt to leave on the premises. Here at Barberton Junk Cars, Summit County’s premier buyer of junk cars, we encourage residents to use our junk my car service option. We buy junk cars throughout the greater Akron area 7 days a week.
In a February 24, 2015 article by Brent Weisberg of KOIN titled ‘The Columbia River Gorge’s abandoned car problem’ highlights an area in the Columbia River Gorge where many junk and scrap cars are illegally being dumped as follows: “A fleet of tow trucks took over the gravel road near Bridal Veil Creek in an effort to remove at least six abandoned vehicles. The vehicles were illegally abandoned or stolen and then ditched by the suspects who rolled them off Palmer Mill Road. The vehicles have ended up anywhere from 50 to 100 feet off the main road. Some of them have been in the woods for more than seven years. It’s illegal to abandon a vehicle without notifying the state, and also illegal to leave a car on private or state property. Don Nelson, who hikes in the Gorge often, said that he has counted at least 30 vehicles on trails throughout the area. He said the Gorge is a prime spot for people to ditch cars. Often times the vehicles, once pushed over, fall down steep embankments and then get covered by brush. Some of the vehicles Nelson found ended up on the banks of Bridal Veil Creek. Nelson said there are environmental concerns because of the fluids that leak from the vehicles.” This story touches on the environmental concerns associated with dumping cars in this nice area of wilderness. One thought I had was that thrill-seekers may be pushing the cars over the embankments to watch the vehicle tumble down hundreds of feet (like you would see in a movie scene).
