Tire Business in Akron
The City of Akron is presenting possible action against allowing used tire stores in residential areas. At Barberton Junk Cars we don’t support government interference in private business. We pay cash for scrap cars & junk cars for cash. We are also a very simple business–offering a fair price for junk cars. We feel that businesses providing a service to the community should be able to operate unopposed by local government bureaucracy.
A January 12, 2015 article by Stephanie Warsmith on Ohio.com titled ‘Akron may change zoning for tire sales businesses, aiming to curb complaints; council honors NAACP president’, with highlights as follows: “Akron may change the zoning for tire sales businesses, aiming to curb complaints by nearby property owners. The city regularly gets complaints about piled-up tires and noisy outdoor repairs at tire businesses that often abut residential areas. Akron City Council is considering legislation that would make tire sales businesses a commercial use, rather than a retail use. The businesses would be required to be on a lot that is at least 18,000 square feet and have a minimum of 100 feet of frontage. Adjustments, replacements and repairs of tires, including wheel alignment and balancing, would be required to be done inside a building on the premises. Councilman Jeff Fusco, who chairs the Planning Committee, feels it makes sense. He drove around in the past few days to look at different tire sales businesses around the city. Council held 2 public hearings, with no one speaking either for or against it. Council didn’t take action. Fusco said he wanted to give council members more time to review it. The legislation would apply to future tire sales businesses, with existing businesses grandfathered and not subject to the new requirements. Mike Antenucci, zoning manager, said the zoning for tire sales businesses harkens back to gas service stations. He said these businesses have changed, with many now lacking sufficient space to perform services they provide & materials they use. The legislation would treat tire sales businesses the same as auto repair businesses. Antenucci said the problem is with those that deal in used tires. He said the tires get stacked up, creating fire & health code hazards, as well as being unsightly. When Akron receives complaints about tire businesses, the city issues a warning and then follows up with fines. Councilman Russel Neal Jr., who has several tire businesses in his ward, said the tire businesses often aren’t quick to respond to complaints. Akron also is looking into a method to crack down more on current tire businesses. John Eaton, Akron’s CSA, is studying legislation in San Antonio & Memphis requiring tire businesses to be licensed.” The full article is available here: http://www.ohio.com/
When government gets involved in an issue about a certain type of business, it is going to be about money. It sounds like Akron is having difficulty collecting taxes from these businesses. As a mostly cash business that has limited documented transactions on purchasing or sales of its inventory, they are likely feeling that they need to get their rightful portion. Another likely issue is the noise associated with the power tool used to remove and apply the wheel lug nuts. This tool makes a noise that we acknowledge is irritating. Ingersoll Rand has a line of “quiet” hand tools that probably cost a bit more, yet deliver comparable performance without all the noise.
