On the May 14^th edition of mychicago.com, Natalie Bomke posted a story titled ‘Controversy surrounds Chicago auto pound lot that uses fork lift to move vehicles’ with the following details: “The bad news is your car got towed, but there could be worse news waiting for you at the auto pound lot. A Chicago woman was shocked at what she witnessed when she arrived to pick up her vehicle. However, the city of Chicago said what she saw was standard operating procedure. On any given day, there are 8,000 vehicles in the city auto pound. When they don’t have a key to move a vehicle, they say the best & safest way is to use a fork lift. Rocking and rolling, bouncing and breaking – is this wild ride damaging your car? This is what the Chicago woman witnessed when she arrived to pick up her vehicle from the city’s Sacramento Boulevard auto pound. Embarrassed about the tow, she asked FOX 32 to conceal her identity.

Steve Sorfleet is the Deputy Commissioner of Streets & Sanitation, which oversees the city’s auto pound and says because of the restrictions we have on space; that they have a lift that can pick the vehicle up by the frame of the vehicle. Frank Guske, the owner of Wells Automotive, says he’s repaired vehicles with undercarriage damage caused by a fork lift. Nowhere in the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s guide does it state to use a forklift to pick the car up off Sorefleet said the city hasn’t received one claim from a vehicle owner citing damage from the fork lift.  When using a fork lift, Guske showed FOX 32 what could be damaged on a newer vehicle because key components are built closer to the ground, for better handling; You’ll see fuel lines that are damaged, you’ll see brake lines that are damaged, you’ll see bent frames and you’ll see bent exhaust.
