Scrap Car Tire Debate
Here at Barberton Junk Cars, a specialist in damaged vehicle removal, we have previously reported on the continuing evolution of scrap car tire recycling. Many athletic fields have implemented artificial grass surfaces where shredded tire crumbs are used to soften the surface. There is a debate on whether use of old scrap tire crumbs can lead to health risks for the athletes that play on the surface.
In a story posted on June 3, 2015 on mynorthwest.com that was written by Sara Lerner, the questions surrounding the usage of crumb rubber as discussed in the story titled ‘Is crumb rubber turf dangerous for kids?’ with the following viewpoints: “Parents with kids in the Edmonds School District are protesting a new synthetic turf sports playfield. Many of them worry about anecdotal evidence linking crumb rubber turf to cancer. A University of Washington Women’s Soccer coach, Amy Griffin, received national attention after compiling anecdotal evidence linking turf playfields and cancer. NBC profiled her last fall when she had a list of 38 college age or younger soccer players, nearly all of them goalkeepers, who had spent their childhood playing on the synthetic turf and then got blood-related cancer. Coach Griffin’s list is up to 126 soccer players with cancer. Osborne also points to national environmental health experts like Dr. David Robert Brown. He knows about the study the district cites but believes it’s not adequate. He said letting kids play on synthetic turf is inappropriate.”

The EPA has researched this topic quite extensively. Here are the findings of one such study: “The study, conducted in 2008, found that the concentrations of materials that made up tire crumb were below levels considered harmful.
- Particulate matter, metals and volatile organic compound concentrations were measured in the air samples & compared with areas away from the turf fields (background levels). The levels found in air samples from the artificial turf were similar to background levels.
- No tire-related fibers were observed in the air samples.
- All air concentrations of particulate matter and lead were well below levels of concern.
- More than 90% of the lead in the tire crumb material was tightly bound and unavailable for absorption by users of the turf fields.
- Zinc, which is a known additive in tires, was found in tire crumb samples. However, air & surface wipe monitoring levels of zinc were found to be below levels of concern.”
