Road Salt Car Damage
Here in Barberton, Ohio we have a rough winter. I remember when I moved to Seattle and had my 2-year old vehicle with me from home. The first time I took the car in for service, the mechanic’s initial reaction was to point out that the underside of the car certainly had seen some tough winter weather. In areas of the US where winter is generally mild you will see local service vehicles spreading hot wood chips or sand on roadways to assist with vehicle traction. In Northeast Ohio the product used is road salt. Road salt is damaging to motor vehicles and ultimately reduces the mechanical and aesthetic life span of a car. Many of those who contact us to receive cash for my car and junk car removal have vehicles that are only 8-9 years old. Many looking to scrap a car for cash, not including a totaled car, have cars that have prematurely deteriorated due to road salt. An article by Kristen Rodman on accuweather.com offers good insight in a story titled ‘Hidden Hazards of Road Salt: Car Corrosion Can Take a Toll’, which brings up the following points: “With winter in full-force across much of the nation, salt crews have been on the go prepping roadways before, after and during inclement winter weather. Although road salt is essential for safe winter driving, it can also lead to numerous car troubles. The biggest threat salt poses to a vehicle is rust, which is accelerated by repeated exposure to salt. Rust on certain sections of a car can create a slew of problems ranging from hydraulic brake system leaks to sub-frame damage. The necessity of road salt makes it hard to avoid these issues but visiting a car wash frequently during the winter months can help car owner’s battle salt’s detrimental effects. Vehicles can also be taken to a collision shop prior to the winter season to have their vehicles pre-treated with an oil solution under-spray to help fight winter road salt damage.”
Thomas M. Kostigen produced an article titled ‘Winter weather dilemma: Balancing salt, safety’ on the topic for USA today with the following information: “While road salt is commonly used to de-ice roadways, it has a high impact on infrastructure, vehicles and, most importantly, the environment. That led the U.S. Department of Transportation to recently establish the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Transportation in Cold Climates to study better ways to manage snow and ice removal. Too much salt also increases the likelihood it will get into drinking water supplies, among other hazards. Advances in technology and chemistry can help keep U.S. roadways moving along. Smart snowplows, for example, not only read temperature but also residual salt from previous applications, helping operators apply less in additional runs. Some governments are already incorporating smart snowplows into their fleets.” The full story is here at this link: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/12/13/kostigen-ice-road-technology/20239695/
