New Recycling Source for Tires
Creative ways to increase recycling in automobile related businesses continues. Tires that are used or otherwise removed from a scrap car or junk vehicle are an environmental hazard. Most of the emphasis recently has been on the best way to dispose of old tires. Goodyear is apparently implementing a new way to recycle a byproduct from the food industry into production of their vehicle tires. On their website http://www.goodyear.com, they outline an environmental, safety and health plan which states the following goal: “Reduce environmental impact & conserve natural resources by minimizing waste & emissions, reusing & recycling materials, and responsibly managing water & energy use” Mr. John Harper, of the Northeast Ohio Media Group, produced an article on September 24, 2014 on www.cleveland.com that reveals a new recycling method at Goodyear. As a buyer and recycler of junk cars, we find it to be an interesting program. “In an effort to improve fuel efficiency, Goodyear started adding silica, the main component of sand, to tires. The company has found a way to use silica in wasted ash from rice mills to cut costs & energy. The cheap source of silica is one part of a plan by Goodyear to cut down on the amount of oil & coal consumed & used as ingredients in its tires. Silica reduces the frictional properties of rubber, which allows high efficiency & performance tires to glide along pavement with less effort. Extracting silica has been neither easy nor fuel efficient. Sand must be heated in furnaces up to 1500 degrees Celsius to separate silica from impurities in the sand. Not so with the rice husk ash, the leftovers from rice mills that burn the husks to generate green power. Once the husk is burned, the ash is comprised mostly of silica. Silica can be extracted from the ash at low temperatures. We are approaching a situation where we could have an all-green tire” states Goodyear’s Surendra Chawla, senior director of external science and technology.
