NE Ohio roads damage vehicles
Residents of Summit County enjoy the spring, summer & fall. Then comes the dreaded NE Ohio winter! Akron area motorists expect the damage that our winters cause, not only in high heating bills, but in the damage it inflicts on our cars. As a buyer of cars for cash in the area, it amazes me how many people (whom I think are calling me for a price for a junk car) are actually looking for used rims to replace the one that is now bent. What I figure to be a call related to a price for scrap cars, actually is someone desperate to piece together the front suspension of the car. The same story each winter as a car drives over a pothole damaging the tire. Next, the driver may not realize that the tire has deflated until they hear that sound of their rim against the street surface. The tire is severely damaged, the rim is bent and likely the front end is now out of alignment. Typically the front end components of the car including the ball & wheel bearings fail on one side of the car under the pressure & riding on a “donut” tire for 2-3 days just exacerbates the problem. A car owner with no savings or available credit will then have the mechanic fix the ball joint or wheel bearing and re-align the vehicle’s front end after replacing the tire & rim. In a few months this guy will return to the shop complaining again and will be informed that the other side (opposite side) of the car’s suspension is now damaged. (which was the reason he had recommended replacing both initially) Meanwhile, your car’s rotors now have a rusty color, which looks terrible through the rims or hubcaps & these rusty rotors are a sign that soon the brake pads, calipers and such will need to be replaced.
In the November 29, 2014 edition of limaohio.com, Greg Sowinski reported an article titled ‘Potholes damage car, wallets’. The summary of the story is as follows: “A pothole that causes hundreds of dollars in damage is a financial mess people don’t want to have to navigate. Last year’s cold & snowy winter created more potholes than usual and people are hoping the local government pays for it. The city of Lima has received 25 claims this year caused by hitting potholes. Those claims total $8,638, Lima Law Director Tony Geiger said. People have filed claims to receive reimbursement for car repairs but Geiger said the city can’t afford to pay people. He said motorists have a level of responsibility, because they choose the roads they drive down and how fast they drive. Geiger says cities struggle with potholes and every driver struggles with them. Geiger recommends people submit claims to their auto insurance, he said the chance the city will pay is not high. We’re not an insurance company that pays claims regardless of fault Geiger said.” The complete story can be seen at http://www.limaohio.com
This Law Director having time to address a minor $8,000 issue, tells you something about the city of Lima. The town has an approximate population of 38,000 people, meaning if 60% of those people work in the city (22,000) and are taxed at the city rate of 1.5% of an income of $30,000 annually then the city brings in 9.9 million each year. So they are commenting about $8,000? Mr. Geiger should be embarrassed for addressing such an issue publicly. Should the city pay for these repairs? The answer is that it is so minuscule that it does not warrant discussion, let alone front page coverage.
