Here at Barberton Junk Cars, a NE Ohio site for selling an old car, we found a story about a closed auto recycling place in GA that has been turned into an art gallery of sorts. This place is no longer offering a price for a damaged car, but rather charging admission to curious photographers and sight-seekers to view the place. Old Car City is located in the tiny town of White, which boasts about 600 residents and is situated in Northern GA.

The June 14, 2015 edition of the nytimes.com has a story titled ‘Nature Helps Squeeze out a Little More Mileage’ composed by Mike Tierney, which the following details: “Nestled in the ridges & valleys about an hour north of Atlanta, the yard was a veritable heaven for do-it-yourselfers looking to save money by opting for used over new. Old Car City is a traditional junkyard no more. It exists as a decaying repository of the auto industry, lovingly neglected & open for viewing — $15 to browse & $25 to take pictures. The mainstream shops have gone through a rethinking of sorts to become what the trade prefers to be called: automotive recyclers. Separating themselves from their predecessors, they computerize inventory, adhere to increasingly strict environmental standards, maintain precise records & choose not to keep snarling Doberman pinschers at the entrance.

These places were compelled to adapt because of tougher environmental & land-use restrictions and in response to the increasing complexity of vehicles. Gone are the days when many items were interchangeable among autos of different models & years. Some items must be electronically reprogrammed, particularly because of technology-intensive hybrid vehicles.

At Old Car City, any dismantling is mostly the result of decay. Dean Lewis employs a small crew known by colorful nicknames to look after matters– about 4,200 automotive carcasses.  About five years ago, Lewis converted exclusively to a gallery.

The cars, which were produced from 1918 to 1972, draw curiosity seekers, usually with cameras, from around the globe. The other day, visitors from Sweden turned up; others have come from as far as Australia, New Zealand & China. To Mr. Lewis, the decision to abandon sales was affirmed when, shortly after he turned down a tempting bid for a 1967 Pontiac GTO, a woman called to ask for that specific model & year as a backdrop for a photograph.
