Dealing with Junk Cars
Our latest story takes us to Benton Harbor, Michigan. BH is a town in the southwestern sector of the state with an estimated population of 10,000. It ranks among the poorest economic areas in the state and efforts are being made to improve its fiscal concerns. Apparently the city has a problem with vacant properties becoming “dumping grounds” for junk cars, debris etc… The Monday January 19, 2015 edition of The Herald Palladium featured a story by Louise Wrege titled ‘The blight attack’ with the following highlights: “There are 149 fewer abandoned vehicles on Benton Harbor streets due to more rigorous enforcement of the city’s ordinances in 2014. Building Official Van Thornton has told the Public Safety & Recreation Committee that his department tagged only 19 vehicles in 2013. The department was much more aggressive in 2014. By state law, vehicles must be properly registered & licensed and must be able to be driven. He said he often finds cars with missing wheels or no engines. He said owners have 48 hours to make necessary corrections after a vehicle is tagged as abandoned. After that, his department can have it towed away; but said his department will work with owners who have legitimate reasons why they more time to make corrections.
Of the vehicles tagged, 58 were brought into compliance while 91 were removed by his department. Public safety officers had another 71 vehicles towed; some of those were abandoned while others were towed after they were in an accident. The junk, trash and debris citations dropped from 469 in 2013 to 406 in 2014 – but remains too high.” He said further that “so many people think that any vacant lot is their own personal dumping ground; dumping trash on vacant lots is a problem.” The full article can be viewed here: http://www.heraldpalladium.com/news/local/the-blight-attack/article_f6e65fc6-2e24-5649-bfb8-6a19d15f545e.html?mode=story
