Auto Warranties Being Scrapped
Here at Barberton Junk Cars, a site for selling a scrap car, we do more than simply handle old car removal. We want to be a source for news & information in the auto scrap & recycling industry, as well as other updates on the vehicle market.
In the June 3rd edition of the Record Eagle an article titled ‘To cut costs, automakers are trimming coverage’ was posted by Paul Stenquist that sheds some light on the auto warranty situation as follows: “General Motors & Fiat Chrysler both moved back warranty coverage for many 2016 models. Both companies altered the powertrain portion of their warranty coverage from 5 years/100,000 miles to 5 years/60,000 miles, matching the terms provided by Toyota, Honda & Ford. GM’s change of coverage applies only to the Chevrolet & GMC brands.
The changes could save the car companies millions in warranty costs. For the owner whose car suffers an engine failure at 65,000 miles, it could be costly. Both GM & Chrysler say that warranty coverage isn’t top-of-mind for customers, stating that warranty coverage do not rank high as a reason to purchase a vehicle among buyers of non-luxury brands. Hyundai & Kia broke new ground by introducing a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty in 1999. GM followed suit with a 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty in 2007. Chrysler introduced a lifetime warranty in 2007, but it was non-transferable; in 2009, the coverage was dialed back to 5 years/100,000 miles.” The complete article is available here: http://www.record-eagle.com/news/drivers_seat/to-cut-costs-automakers-are-trimming-coverage/article_b354bb62-0a3e-11e5-9c9e-479448d91148.html
So it looks like GM and Chrysler are offering the same warranty as Honda, which is 5-years/60,000 miles on the powertrain. Next let’s examine the Hyundai warranty details, which are supposed to be the best in the industry: (Hyundai 2016 warranty details)

Drivetrain: 10 Years/100,000 Miles:

I recently read a story on seedebrun.com where her Hyundai had approximately 65-70K miles on it and the motor died while on the highway. Now, she initially had purchased the Hyundai largely due to the 10 year / 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. After inspection it was determined that the thermostat, which regulates the engine’s cooling system had failed, which subsequently caused the motor to fail. Hyundai stood strong in their position that the motor was not the defective item, since it was the thermostat that originated the problem. Her warranty claim was denied, despite her persistence through various channels. Based on the above information, it seems that the auto warranties in most cases are not as great for the consumer, in the event that they should ever need it!
