Auto Recycling, Retreaded Tires
In the auto recycling and scrap business, the recycled “retreaded” tires industry has had many critics over the years and experienced a significant decline in popularity in the 1980’s and 1990’s for a variety of reason including the transition to all-season tire products. Retreaded tires were previously very popular in the regions where vehicle owners used snow tires. One primary concern among consumers centers of whether or not “retreads” are a safe option. Harvey Brodsky addresses this concern in his article titled ‘Is it really safe to use retreads on my truck or car?’ from the Retreaded Tire Association (RTA). Mr. Brodsky’s opinion is as follows: “If you are wondering whether you can use retreads on your truck, passenger car or most any other kind of vehicle, the answer is definitely YES. Retreads have been safely used by school & municipal buses, commercial & military airlines, package delivery services including DHL, Fed Ex, race cars, fire engines and other emergency vehicles, and by millions of trucks and passenger vehicles of all sizes worldwide. A good example of how safe retreads are is to look at the insurance industry. If retreads were less safe than new tires, insurance companies would add a premium to the insurance rates for vehicles using retreads, but in fact they couldn’t care less whether their insured uses retreads or new tires, because the accident rate of vehicles using retreads is no different from that of vehicles using new tires.” The complete story can be read here: http://www.retreadtire.org/interesting-articles_is-it-really-safe-to-use-retreads-on-my-truck-or-car_17.htm
Goodyear recently unveiled some new retreaded products to its offerings. In an article titled ‘Goodyear adds SmartWay retreads’ in the December 4th edition of tirebusiness.com the following information was released: “Goodyear is adding 2 SmartWay-verified retreads, the G392A SSD UniCircle and G394A SST UniCircle, to its portfolio. These products offer lower rolling resistance, which is a key to helping fleets lower their fuel costs.” According to Brian Buckham, GM of product marketing at Goodyear says “Because there is no cutting or splicing during the UniCircle tread application process, the retreads are uniform & balanced, which helps extend casing life and mileage. Ultimately, our goal is to help fleets lower their operating costs.” The full story is available for review at: http://www.tirebusiness.com/article/20141204/NEWS/141209965/goodyear-adds-smartway-retreads.
