Auto Fluid Recycling
As a part of the auto recycling (ie… scrap my car, junk my car) business, we consider “green” initiatives in our cash for cars operation. When you sell a car for cash to us, the recycling process of all vehicle components begins. This article also applies to the DIY vehicle owner who chooses to change their transmission fluid, radiator fluid etc… There are several types of brake fluid listed here:
- Dot 3: Typically glycol ether based. Used mostly in day to day passenger vehicles
- Dot 4: Also glycol ether based—but enhanced with borate esters for increased stability
- Dot 5: A silicone based fluid designed for superb water resistance
According to ecolife.com there are several factors to consider in dealing with brake fluid:
- Toxicity: Because brake fluid is alcohol-based & contains solvents that can form glycols, it is toxic when ingested by you, your children, your pets, or other wildlife.
- Flammability: Brake fluid from a car is flammable & should be handled with care.
- Heavy metals: Used auto brake fluid is typically contaminated with heavy metals & solvents that make it even more hazardous to human and ecological well-being.
Auto recyclers, such as cash for cars companies will typically maintain large drums which separately contain the various fluids encountered in a scrap my car operation. A junk my car buyer may recycle these fluids in-house or use a 3rd party service to remove fluids from scrap cars and junk vehicles. Ecolife.com outlines several options for disposal of such fluids: “To recover brake fluid, scrap auto recyclers will mix it with other fluids to create alternative fuels which are then used in other applications. So when you’re stuck with used brake fluid and in need of a recycling solution, there are several things you can do. But first, prepare it for transportation to the recycling center by sealing it in a jar with a secure lid. Then try out these recycling options:
- HHW collection: Many communities now have either periodical or year-round HHW collection sites where you can drop off everything from unused paint to pesticides to auto fluids. And of course, if your community lacks a HHW collection day, start one!
- Your local auto shop: If you’ve got a good relationship with your local auto repair shop, they may be willing to take your used auto fluids for recycling (sometimes for a small fee). If you haven’t already introduced yourself, now might be a great time to do so!
- Landfill options: Some solid waste management authorities handle HHW by collecting it at the dump sites directly.”
