5 Most Common Scrap Cars
Barberton Junk Cars here with another posting relating to the auto scrap and recycling business. We are among the local sites to scrap a car in Canton, Kent and Ravenna. As an experienced auto buyer and a location where to sell a junk car, people ask me what the most common vehicles are that we encounter in damaged car removal. All vehicles will eventually reach ‘end of life’ status, which for some people is sooner than others based on many factors. One logical perspective is that the top selling new cars (based on volume) from 10-15 years ago, are the ones most commonly seen by a scrap auto buyer in 2015. Here are the 5 most common scrap cars that we are buying lately:
- The Chrysler PT Cruiser. Although this isn’t the most common vehicle that we come upon in volume, it is the most commonly scrapped later-model car we see. Various sources confirm that 1.3 million of these were produced during its span from 2000-2009. To a scrap auto buyer, a 2003 to 2005 model car is considered late-model and for some reason these are plentiful amid the scrap heap.
- The 1998-2002 Ford Taurus. This model is very commonly scrapped. The transmissions on these vehicles are far from dependable and if you have one with 80,000 miles on the original tranny, you will likely be in for an expensive repair. One thing to consider here is that many of the Taurus’ in this era were originally rental vehicles before entering the used market. Some will cite that rental cars are commonly abused, thus leading to failures over time. The critics of this rental car theory will state that since rental cars are “supposedly” kept on a rigid service and maintenance schedule, that they should be good used cars in later years.
- The 1998-2003 Pontiac Grand AM. Maybe they just sold a lot of these cars, because they seem to be sold for scrap and in the damaged car removal process everywhere. In defense of the model, perhaps it is that there are just so many on the road that it seems logical that such a volume would be approaching ‘end-of-life’ vehicle status. Another thought is that the owners tend to be younger people (especially in the 2-Door Coupe) and they tend to put more stress on a vehicle and also are less likely to adhere to service and maintenance schedules.
- The Dodge and Chrysler mini-vans from 1997-2002. It seems that regardless of the specific model, the death procession of these vehicles into the scrap yard is continuous. Perhaps that these are subjected to carrying more passengers than a standard car, plays a role? If you know someone who has had one of these vehicles for a few years, ask them, they have probably replaced the transmission.
- The last spot is a dead-heat between the Ford Escort and the Chevy Cavalier. We scrap a load of these every month!
